Bernaví & Terres de l'Ebre
New weekend of tastings and introducing BERNAVÍ ... always a pleasure to participate!
On Thursday 13th March, we were guests at Jordi's home in Tortosa, at VINOTECA TANINS to present our project and our wines as part of the wonderful initiative by Jordi "monographic tasting of DO Terra Alta". With a perfect setting and with the local full, we told our story, our philosophy and our passion and we tasted the whole range of BERNAVÍ wines. We strongly invite you to go and visit Jordi and Pili at Vinoteca Tanins: you will find friends, a great setting and suggestions for interesting wines and tapas ... and the selection of our wines for tasting and purchase!
Saturday, March 15th we were invited to the presentation of the book "Bienvenid@ al campo" in La Fatarella, at Fundació El Solà. We found friends and followed Alba and Ramiro's words: great comunicators and fans of rural world. At the end of the presentation of the book we explained BERNAVÍ project as a practical and direct case of agricultural entrepreneurship in the area. Later, such as a logical pairing, we tasted our 3D3 2012, a wine which want to be a fusion and a synergy between three grape varieties and three persons, where we look for land expression and want to respect it in every wine composing 3D3... in line with Ramiro's vision about the future of the return to the origins and respect of rural areas.

Wine & Delight
We ended this week pairing our wines ... and it was a great success!
In Barcelona , on Thursday March 6th , we were guests of Lautrec Restaurant in Gracia: with Cris and Xavier we offered to costumers and friends a tasting menu with three fo BERNaví's wines, presenting our project, our philosophy and playing with sensations: from affinities to the surprises delighting palates.
Kitchen chosed the highest quality ingredients to create dishes in perfect harmony with NOTTE BIANCA 2013, 3D3 2012, CA'VERNET 2011 ... a perfect and friendly service, a very nice atmosphere: thanks guys for the great experience!
We strongly advise you to go and try the original and genuine Lautrec's cuisine ... along with BERNAVÍ in their wine-list!
Saturday March 8th we spent the day with a great family in Amettla de Mar at El Nostre Cantir: a farm five minutes from the sea, surrounded by Mediterranean countryside where Carme, Paco, Angela and Francesc welcomed customers and friends in their paradise.
A sunny spring day, trees and orchard in full bloom, a museum of antiquities , animals, were the frame for a fantastic day.
We delighted guests with dishes made with healthy ingredients and traditional recipes, paired with the four BERNAVÍ's wines: we played with sensations and enjoyed a wonderful company.
It was a great pleasure to begin this partnership with El Nostre Cantir family and we recommend you to go to spend a holiday with them ... sure that you will fall in love with the place and people, and that you will enjoy with their cuisine and wines.
Two opportunities to communicate with our wines paired with different conception dishes all BERNAVÍ passion for gastronomy and happy convivium!

3D3 2012 at El Alma del Vino
Yesterday while I was driving to Barcelona a twit: in Bilbao Juan Cuatrecases opened a bottle of BERNAVÍ 3D3 2012 and we are very proud for the result. Our 3D3 tasted by one of the most active and honest catadores I follow, gives pure sensations: Juan gets the passion and essence of our 3D3 2012... a pleasure read his post and his enthusiasm in describing the fruit of our work.
Enjoy this reading!
Thanks a lot Juan!

3 awards of 3 !!!
Last night we new another fantastic thing: the results of the competition "International Wine Guide 2013" was published, and we made hat-trick. Of three wines presented, recognized three medals!
2425 wines from 29 different Countries were presented at the competition and finally 728 were rewarded: from Great Gold to Bronze. The level of the wines presented is really important and BERNAVÍ obtained really great results.
First of all our CA'VERNET 2011 was awarded with the GOLD MEDAL, one of 141 awarded by the jury. Our only comment: wow! Our CA'VERNET collect better and better results as it rests in bottle (Bacchus2013, CWWSC2013)
For the first time we presented to a competition our NOTTE BIANCA and we do it with the second vintage, 2012: SILVER MEDAL, one of the 293!
And also what initially seemed to be a young red as the 3D3 2011, its first vintage, continues to surprise (CWWSC2013): BRONZE MEDAL a few weeks before bottling 2012 one. Awarded Bronze medals were just 275.
With these results also in the international arena I think I can say that BERNAVÍ started on the right way and that the result of good work is recognized.

A WEEK FULL OF EVENTS
It has been an amazing week filled with lots of events and as we say at Bernavi every event is really just catching up with friends!
We were very lucky to receive a visit from the technical staff of the television program “Entre Vinyes” which turned out to be an unforgettable experience. The program of the national channel "La 2" of TVE dedicated an episode to Terra Alta and we had the honour of being amongst the wineries chosen to be recorded. Francesc, Xavier, Jordi, Isabel, Xavi were the friendly and professional staff who belonged to the show and they accompanied a group of our guests during their visit to BERNAVÍ, where they saw our beautiful vineyards and tasted all the exciting flavours of our wines. As our luck would have it the weather decided it wanted to join us, but in the end it was a perfect day. Amazed by the naturalness of the staff of Entre Vinyes and thanks to the sympathy of the group, we began to lose the "stage fright" and we found ourselves in front of the cameras as if it were something we do every day ... explaining our terroir, our history, our wines, it was an afternoon full of excitement and laughter, and at the end of the day we celebrated with a little party on the terrace overlooking the vineyards and in the company of our new friends.
We also were lucky enough to face the media again so soon and during a meeting about tourism in Terra Alta, we recorded a radio interview on Catalunya Infrmació: together with Josep Maria from Nou Moderno, where we explained our vision about wine tourism and we promoted the exciting and upcoming activities that BERNAVÍ will do in the near future.By the end of the week we celebrated the Summer Solstice with an event that was incredible! With Maria Rosa and Josep Maria from Nou Moderno, we organized a tasting of our wines paired with some unusual sweet whims! We did it by night, with the light of the fires and the moon full of positive energy, in the yard of our winery, surrounded by vineyards and accompanied by a fantastic line-up of Jazz music. Xavi, Josep Enric, Laura, Imma and Rafa played in perfect harmony letting the fires dance with each note played. We served NOTTEBIANCA 2012 with a fresh cheese (Mato), quince jelly, toasted hazelnuts and caramelized sugar; 21VENTUNO 2012 paired with a delicious strawberry ice cream and fresh cherries; 3D3 2011 was best suited with a rich dark chocolate brownie with nuts and crisp orange; CA'VERNET 2011 was curiously but perfectly paired with an apple tart with Catania (cocoa-covered almonds). To round off the night Josep Maria delighted us with a beautiful Gin and tonic cocktail, the Gin being developed with inflorescences of grapes, perfectly in tune with the season of the vineyards; the cocktail was paired with a pannacotta with lime, cinnamon and apricot puree. All pairings were perfect and our guests enjoyed the night of the Summer Solstice.
Lastly we celebrated the master's touch of our friend Rafel: our own illuminated logo inaugurated on the 21th!

Opening 2013...with award!
After Xmas holiday in Italy we got back with a full rhythm with winter works and we received the results of the competition "Catavinum World Wine & Spirits 2013" held in Vitoria-Gasteiz ... a really good news. Opening the e-mail we read:
"El Concurso [...] acaba de publicar los resultados de la cata de vinos y licores del mundo de la edición 2013. Para la realización del concurso se cataron un total de 1839 vinos y licores, de los cuales, obtuvieron medalla y su correspondiente diploma 549. Al certamen se presentaron vinos de más de 20 países" (The competition [...] has just published the results of 2013 edition of wines and spirits tasting. For the competition have tasted a total of 1839 wines and spirits, of which 549 have been awarded medals and relevant certificate. There were wines presented from more than 20 countries).
Well ... You can find the awards at www.catavinum.net/cwwsc, but we can tell you that ours 3D3 2011 and CA'VERNET 2011 have both received the silver medal in the category of red wines. A pride for our first vintage! Here you have certificates...

1...2...3D3 !!!
Guided by a relentless series of samplings and tastings September has arrived and we pause for a moment to breathe, just like our grapes, we all need a little September air.
Because the harvest was really more complex this year we have now come to this long awaited month where the temperature drops a little, the sun is warm during the day and the cool night air brings the masters touch.
The maturation of the early varieties of the red grapes is filled with a charge of emotion and makes me believe this harvest is going to be really interesting.
The first to be harvested is the Merlot. The land is fully exposed to the fresh winds of the September nights. The grapes are swollen, the skins and seeds so sweet and the pulp is fresh which gives you a perfect balance when the time comes to harvest.
We are at the beginning of September, the sun in the middle of the day is still warm so we want to bring the merlot into the wine cellar as quickly as possible. Still exhilarated from our Notte Bianca harvest we don't put to sleep our "mental lanterns" and pick the grapes during the night.
One: Merlot
At sunrise we let the whole grapes of our merlot begin to ferment. Frequent replacements and strict temperature control drive the fermentation of the three clones of merlot into one.
As we continue to taste the grapes day by day the weather keeps gradually changing. To give you an idea we walk between the lines in long sleeve shirts until at least noon.
The warm sun kisses the clusters of grapes which breathe in the much desired September air.
In the Garnaxta Negra section, next to the olive trees and oleanders the beautiful parcels are exposed to the winds from the southwest. We expect the thick skin of these grapes to relax a bit and ensure the seeds start to lose their green tanning. I believe the current results are fantastic!
Two: Garnaxta
Now we are in to the serious side of September, where we pick up our Garnaxta early in the morning until the sun leaves us in the afternoon. From here we move straight into the cellar to try and work the three clones to ensure the skins can transmit to the wine all the flavours of the red fruit that the vineyard has given away.
Replacements away from excessive oxygen, short maceration and correct temperature ensure that every morning when you walk into the cellar and first open the door you are filled with the aroma of succulent fruit! I find it is just as exhilaration as waking up to your first coffee in the morning.
Three: Syrah
In the valley, in a field with a high context of silt and chalk, our Syrah plants are grown in Gouyot. They are tireless under the sun and are caressed from the warm breeze of the night from the southwest which helps to ripen the grapes with an appearance of perfection.
They suffered a bit more in the heat of the summer but we have helped them. We thinned the vines in July so that there was a vegetative-productive balance during the maturation which leads to the harvest of ripened grapes.
The best part is we succeeded! The three clones of Syrah have responded well and the grapes consist of sweet tannins with a bit of spice and the colour intensity of the skins is just phenomenal!
Working the Syrah vat during fermentation has been a struggle previously due to staining. What happens is that a few hours from the grapes being destemmed the colour of the juices is purple and replacement after replacement the reflexes just turned more and more blue. It is incredible.
After a short maceration it is time to extract all the varietal characters from our grapes. One by one we racked our variety with a very gentle pressing.
Finally!
Three lands... three varieties... each with three clones... three vats with three different wine making protocols, each variety is interpreted differently and respectfully.
Three souls, three interpreters of the whole cycle from planting to pressing all the way to the vat!
1...2...3D3!!! Absolutely amazing!!!
In Vino vivendo continues...
